Bornova Symposium
Tribute to the 'Dervish of the Age' at the Bornova cultural heritage gathering
The International Bornova History and Culture Symposium, organised by Bornova Municipality, took place with participation at both national and international level. At the Symposium, which attracted great interest from history enthusiasts, the preservation and sustainability of cultural heritage was emphasised in line with the Bornova Heritage Project realised by the Bornova Municipality Museum Directorate.
Academics and city administrators came together in Bornova
The Symposium was held with the participation of academics, cultural heritage specialists and city administrators at national and international level. The opening began with a session entitled "Local Government and Cultural Heritage Management." The session was moderated by Prof. Dr Koray Velibeyoğlu of İzmir Institute of Technology.
The continuity of cultural heritage was underlined
Former Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Aziz Kocaoğlu spoke about projects such as the Homeros Valley, the Roman Ancient Theatre and the Agora excavations, stating: "Although İzmir did not receive support from central government, it succeeded in preserving its history through its own dynamism." Prof. Dr Velibeyoğlu added: "The most important aspect of support is continuity," drawing particular attention to the economic dimension of excavation work in İzmir.
8,500 years of history at Yeşilova Mound
Excavation Team Leader Assoc. Prof. Dr Zafer Derin described the work that extended İzmir's known history from 5,000 to 8,500 years. Prof. Dr Kamil Okyay Sındır recalled the importance of the award-winning visitor centre established beside Yeşilova Mound during his tenure as mayor.
