Crete Memory House will bring history to life for Bornova residents
The story that began with a donation from Cretan emigrant Nigar Balın is becoming part of Bornova's cultural memory. Bornova Municipality, which is bringing the city's heritage values to light one by one through the Bornova Heritage Project, aims to open the Cretan Memorial House as a living urban-memory venue.
Bornova Municipality is restoring the listed historic building in the Kazım Dirik neighbourhood, donated by Cretan emigrant Nigar Balın, and bringing it to the city as the Cretan Memorial House and Art Gallery. The project aims to transform the building — whilst preserving its original stone fabric — into a culture and events centre that will keep Cretan culture alive. Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasised that the restoration would add value to Bornova's multicultural history, adding that they were conducting a programme through the Bornova Heritage project that brings all the district's historic values to the fore.
Bornova Municipality is preparing to restore the historic building on 367/3 Street in the Kazım Dirik neighbourhood — donated by Cretan emigrant Nigar Balın in 2020 — and bring it to the city as the "Cretan Memorial House and Art Gallery." The restoration projects prepared for the building, which is listed by the Council of Monuments, have been approved by the relevant institutions. Bornova has thus taken an important step towards gaining a new centre that will keep its cultural heritage alive.
A cultural bridge reaching from the traces of the past into the future
The complex, which spans a total area of 250 square metres and comprises a single-storey and a two-storey building together with an outbuilding, will display original objects, traditional costumes, photographs and handicrafts reflecting Cretan culture.
Visitors will gain a modern cultural space equipped with exhibition and events halls and a cafeteria, in an atmosphere where they can experience the stories of Cretan families that extend to İzmir.
At the heart of the restoration: "A place where memories come alive"
The project is being carried out in line with the restoration philosophy that reflects Bornova Municipality's approach to cultural heritage. The aim is to unite the spirit of the past with today's needs whilst preserving the building's original stone fabric. Prepared under the concept of "A Place Where Memories Come Alive," the project will, with its Memorial House, café, conference area, exhibition hall and green garden, be a multifunctional centre that both keeps history alive and hosts artistic events.
Mayor Eşki: "We are creating a space that keeps Bornova's history alive"
Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki met with donor Nigar Balın in front of the historic building and gave information about the project: "The Bornova Cretan Memorial House is a very important place for Bornova's history and for the Cretans of Bornova. We are starting the restoration process. We want this space to be gained for Bornova. We shall complete our work as soon as possible so that all Bornova residents can benefit from the beauties of the Cretan Memorial House."
Eşki also emphasised that the project is not merely a restoration but a cultural movement that will make visible once again Bornova's multicultural identity.
The spirit of Crete will live on in Bornova
When completed, the "Cretan Memorial House" will not only keep alive the memories of families of Cretan origin but, by hosting art, culture and educational events, will make Bornova a cultural centre of attraction. The project will serve as an exemplary step in terms of the conservation of cultural heritage, the development of tourism and the addition of new value to Bornova's identity through the repurposing of a historic building.
